The Lego Train Rides Again!

On Saturday, February 25, members of the RMD Kids Club came together to build the newest additions to our Lego Train. (You may recall that these cars were going to be built at the 2005 Spring Meet. We all remember what happened there!) Anyway, these cars had sat in their boxes for long enough, and it was time to do something about it! Members (old and young) spent nearly three hours building and then running the train on our expanded layout. As you can see, everyone had a good time and was very proud. It was really amazing to watch these young minds at work. Future architects and engineers - train or otherwise? – we’ll see. It was really fun for all. We’ll soon be announcing the date for our annual picnic at the Colorado Railroad Museum, and we’ll start ramping up plans for family activities at the 2007 TCA National Convention. And speaking of the Convention, have you seen the super-cool Kids Club Convention car? It’s the first one, ever!!! Watch for more news soon and keep playing trains!

Kids Club at the Holiday Meet

As usual, the Kids Corner and Craft Area were a highlight for many families at the 2005 Holiday Meet.  However, we had something new this time in the Kids Corner.  Those periodic cheers (or groans) that you may have heard coming from the far end of the hall weren't over some deal that was snagged (or lost) - it was the spectators watching the train races!  With over 90 kids taking part, this proved to be even more successful than we anticipated.  We even had some TCA members sneak down to "crash" the party - literally! The race route was a double-track, out and back course that looked like the outline of a light bulb.
The exciting part was the inclusion of a 45-degree crossing at the top of the curve (so a train going out on the outside track came back on the inside). It proved to be quite challenging and a ton of fun. Once everyone made it safely (they got multiple attempts) they got a little certificate saying "I survived".
It was a huge blast, and something that we will continue to do whenever we have the space!

Crash!

Starting Line

HEY LEGO MANIACS!

The Kids Club has some new Lego freight cars that have never been built!  (They’ve been sitting in their boxes since we got snowed out of Colorado Springs…) So on Saturday, February 25 we’re going to build them and run this new train on our expanded Lego layout. We’ll meet at Kevin’s house at 2pm and get busy. Please let Kevin know if you can come (so we have enough snacks!) and if you need directions. We had a great time last time we built with Legos, so I hope you can come!

History of RMD Kid's Corner

New TCA member Kevin Harbison and his wife Christine came up with a great idea for the 2001 RMD Christmas Show--Kid's Corner.  With donations from Hank Argue, Warren Mizell and RMD, Kevin and Christine set up an toy train play area for youngsters.  This play area was literally a "smashing" success--exceeding all expectations.  Kudos for Kevin and Christine for seeing a need and doing something about it!
